GAMBUSIA,
THREADFIN SHAD GIZZARD SHAD &SHINERS
|
Gambusia are an underutilized
forage fish for ponds. They occur naturally on Meadowlark ranch and provide
great forage for small BG and small LMB. They are especially sought after by
the TGG.
Two attempts have been made at establishing
threadfin shad into Nova
both failed. One attempt was made to establish
gizzard shad and that has met with very limited results. Few of them remain and
those that do, do not add significantly to the forage base.
Update
07/12/07:
As mentioned above, Gizzard
Shad(GS) stocking resulted in mostly a snack food
for predators...until this year. Over the past few
years I have noticed usually a small single school
of what I assumed were GS that had reproduced.
This year there has been an explosion of shad
reproduction. I've counted 5 very large
distinct schools of GS. Although it is possible
these are threadfins and I've mistakenly
identified them as GS, they sure look like GS to
me. What do you think?

UPDATE 03_14_2010:
Golden Shiner: This shiner was caught while fishing for 'gills. Weight = 1.86 pounds; Length 16 inches...more than three times the existing State Record. Soon to be a new State record.
